About the Event

Learn to Sew: Overalls!

This 6-part class is for anyone who wants to learn how to sew or practice (no experience needed!)! There will be 6 sessions ($25 ea) needed to finish the overalls. Setting this class series as a one-time-purchase, but please let me know if you'd prefer to pay $25 + tax ($27.50) before each class. Classes are on Tuesdays from 5:30-8:30pm: 5/16, 5/23, 5/30, 6/6, 6/13 & 6/20. There'll be 1 or 2 make up sessions added if you're unable to attend one of the dates.

Things you'll learn/practice:

-Understanding a sewing pattern (we're using Simplicity 9590 Overalls as a base, and can adjust the size and proportions to fit all bodies).

-Cutting out fabric

-Applying interfacing

-Using a sewing machine to do basic seams

-Using a serger to finish seams

-Making hand pockets and patch pockets

-Adjusting a garment to fit you perfectly

-Setting stud buttons or hand sewing buttons

-Attaching overalls hardware

Things you'll need/are provided:

I'll have some upcycled fabrics for you to chose from at the studio in neutrals and prints! If you'd prefer to chose your own fabric, you'll need:

-4 yds of 45" wide fabric

-OR-

-3 yds of 60" wide fabric

Suggested fabrics: Denim, twill, chino, corduroy, thicker cotton, thicker linen, poplin

I made the sample overalls out of a sun-faded table cloth that was 50c at the thrift store and love how they turned out! Just make sure the table cloth has enough fabric (6480sq inches)

5/16 Session 1: Use a class-provided Overalls sewing pattern to cut out your choice of materials. Feel free to bring your own material, or choose from some upcycled options at the studio. Seattle Recreative is a great place to get secondhand fabric. Thrift stores also have a great selection of linens and fabrics that'd be great for the overalls (curtains, blanket, tablecloths, fabric yardage). We'll also iron on some interfacing to stabilize seams.

5/23 Session 2: Begin to sew the overalls. We'll use home sewing machines for the basic seams, and a serger to finish the seams. Feel free to bring your own home sewing machine or use a studio-provided one. The goal for this class is to finish most of the front legs panel.

5/30 Session 3: Continue sewing! The goal for this class is to finish most of the bib panels and pockets.

6/6 Session 4: Completing the bib, centerback panels, and shoulder straps.

6/13 Session 5: Sewing up the leg panels and side openings.

6/20: Finishing touches! Hems & hardware!

Space:

Summit Selvage is located on the corner of 12th Ave and Pike St in Capitol Hill, Seattle. The entrance door will be propped open on the 12th Ave side. The space is down the stairs and the last door on your left. The basement is shared with dance studios, and has unisex bathrooms on the third floor. Parking is a big challenge, but luckily we're 1 block from the 2, 12, and 11 bus stops, as well as .5 miles from the lightrail station.

Covid: Masks are currently recommended. Thanks for understanding!
