About the Event

Learn to Sew: Jackets!

This 4-part class is for anyone who wants to learn how to sew or practice (no experience needed!)! There will be 4 sessions needed to finish the jackets. Setting this class series as a one-time-purchase, but please let me know if you'd prefer to pay $30 + tax ($33.08) before each class. Classes are on Wednesdays from 5:30-8:30pm: 7/5, 7/12, 7/19 & 7/26. There'll be 1 or 2 make up sessions added if you're unable to attend one of the dates.

Things you'll learn/practice:

-Understanding a sewing pattern

-Cutting out fabric

-Applying interfacing

-Using a sewing machine to do basic seams

-Using a serger to finish seams

-Making hand pockets and/or patch pockets

-Cuff sewing options

-Hems

-Adjusting a garment to fit you perfectly

-Completing a jacket closure (stud buttons, snap buttons, buttons, or zippers)

Things you'll need/are provided:

I'll have some upcycled fabrics for you to chose from at the studio in neutrals and prints! If you'd prefer to chose your own fabric, you'll need:

-3 yds of 45" wide fabric

-OR-

-2.5 yds of 60" wide fabric

Suggested fabrics: Midweight Denim, twill, chino, corduroy, thicker cotton, thicker linen, poplin

This could be a fun way to use a curtain or large tablecloth too! Seattel Recreative and thrift stores are great places to find textiles for reuse.

7/5 Session 1: Use a class-provided sewing pattern to cut out your choice of materials. Feel free to bring your own material, or choose from some upcycled options at the studio. Seattle Recreative is a great place to get secondhand fabric. Thrift stores also have a great selection of linens and fabrics that'd be great for jackets (curtains, lightweight blanket, tablecloths, fabric yardage). We'll also iron on some interfacing to stabilize seams. Begin to sew shoulders and pockets into side seams.

7/12 Session 2: Sew sleeves into sleeve cap. Sew up and finish side seams.

7/19 Session 3: Attach facing and create collar. Start hems.

7/26 Session 4: Finish hems and front closure!

8/2: Possible make up session

Space:

Summit Selvage is located on the corner of 12th Ave and Pike St in Capitol Hill, Seattle. The entrance door will be propped open on the 12th Ave side. The space is down the stairs and the last door on your left. The basement is shared with dance studios, and has unisex bathrooms on the third floor. Parking is a big challenge, but luckily we're 1 block from the 2, 12, and 11 bus stops, as well as .5 miles from the lightrail station.

Covid: Masks are currently recommended. Thanks for understanding!
